Man, 25 Years Old (Caught on the Horns of Deception)

I was two and a half years into my second marriage and we were attending a small prayer and Bible study group which met in a home.  Much to our surprise, the lady of the house began to cast out demons from those in attendance.  Since we were all amateurs and the prayer meeting seemed to have lost its original purpose, we decided to visit Hegewisch Baptist Church.  There we found deliverance proceeding on under scriptural guidelines and many persons were getting help by well trained, efficient and very competent workers.

After the woman leader of the prayer group had given us a “prophecy,”  my wife began to suffer from mental anxiety.  The woman had said that our marriage would break up unless my wife received deliverance. Allegedly this was to set me free to “minister.”   We agreed my wife should go south to rest.

While she was gone, I enjoyed the feeling of being free, and began to think how much easier it would be to serve the Lord all alone.  No more hindrances and no split personalities to cope with.  It sounded great and eagerly I sought for confirmation in the Bible.

You find what you look for.  I read “Choose ye this day whom you shall serve” (Joshua 24:15) and “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Romans 8:30).  I was really hooked and deceived by this devilish use of scripture.  I wept and fervently declared I would surely choose God.  I would allow no creature, not even my wife, to separate me from the love of Christ!  I was elated with religious feelings as I called Miami to have an attorney arrange for another divorce.  After all, had not God led me to the verses?

The Lord intervened to stop my foolishness however, and upon her return my wife flatly refused to sign any papers.  She had been reading Pastor Worley’s book, Battling the Hosts of Hell — Diary of an Exorcist  and wanted to ask some questions.  I agreed to take her to his office for an appointment.  I dropped her off and went to park the car.  When I walked in, the pastor let me have it with both barrels, repeating essentially the same things a friend in Florida had written me earlier.

The minister asked me point blank, “Do you love your wife?”  I said that I did but would give her up if the Lord asked it. He pointed out how illogical this was since God was in the business of building homes and marriages, not destroying them.  It made no difference what our status was when we married.  Once we had pledged ourselves to each other in holy matrimony, then it became God’s will for us to be together.

As he reasoned with me, the scales dropped from my eyes.  At last I began to see how I had been deceived by a sly and vicious enemy into thinking that my marriage must be sacrificed to please God.  What an evil fraud to be persuaded that you do God a service by disobeying His Word. Tears of joy filled my eyes as I realized the trap from which I had been rescued by sound counsel from the Word of God.  I loved my wife and we would have a life of fulfillment together, not separated.

Happily we left the office after having forgiven one another and pledging our love anew.  When all this falsehood had taken hold of me, I had removed my wedding band and put it away at home.  We stopped at a cafe later and as we were enjoying the restoration of our relationship, my wife noticed my ring was on my hand!   Although I had not worn it for days, there it was, and I had not put it on!  Praise the Lord, now we are ever on the alert for Satan’s moves to divide us and are determined to draw close together to work for the Lord.  We also learned by a near disaster that all prophecies are not valid.
