What Does the Bible Say About Curses and Sins of the Fathers?

What does the Bible say about curses and the Sins of the Fathers?

RESPONSE:

Exodus 20:5

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

Exodus 34:7

7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

Numbers 14:18

18 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.

Deuteronomy 5:9-10

9 …for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,

10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

Job 4:8

8 Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

Jeremiah 31:29

29 …The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.

Galatians 6:7-8

7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Pastor Win Worley, in his booklet, “Curses & Soul Ties/Binding & Loosing Spirits” lists 61 curses. Some of these curses are upon those involved in witchcraft, those who have had homosexual relationships, rebellious children who refuse to listen to their parents, those who didn’t give God tithes and offerings, upon women who did not keep their virginity until marriage, plus 56 more!

Some curses, like the curse of illegitimacy, last for 10 generations. Witchcraft curses also can go for 10 generations.

Do you know what your great grandfather did in his entire life that might be affecting you through curses? Do you know what his great grandfather did? Or his great grandfather did? The Bible is clear that the sins of the father shall be passed down to the third and fourth generations.

Ever heard the statement, “You’re a chip off the old block…he’s a hothead too.” Or the one that goes, “It’s the Italian in me.” Or perhaps, “You think I drink a lot? You should see my aunt…she’s a drunk.”

Have you or any of your ancestors ever read a horoscope? Ever been hypnotized or practiced hypnosis? ESP? Participated in a Seance? Played with a Ouija Board? Did the two stick “Water Witching”? Ever had a handwriting analysis? Had your palm read at the fair? Do you know your sign of the Zodiac? Played Dungeons and Dragons? Are your ears pierced? Any martial arts in the family? Do you own unicorn statues? Do you wear Ankhs or Italian Horns on necklaces? Ever been involved in an Eastern religion such as Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism, I Ching, Krishna, Zen or any cult such as Jehovah Witnesses, Christian Science, Rosicrucians, Theosophy, Unity, Metaphysics, Bahai, Mormons, Scientology, Inner Peace Movement, Spiritual Frontiers, Urantia, Moonies, Children of God, The Farm, The Way, Islam, Black Muslims, The Walk?

If you have, you’re cursed, your children are cursed, your grandchildren are cursed, your great grandchildren are cursed, and your great great grandchildren are cursed. Now think back…have any of your ancestors on either side of the family ever practiced any of the above? Guess what? You’re cursed, your children could be cursed, your grandchildren could be cursed, and your great grandchildren could be cursed. In God’s Word, all the above bring curses upon you and your family line.

Is it possible then, that the Bible could be true concerning curses, and that these behaviors are not necessarily learned or an effect of ones’ environment? That perhaps the curses placed on the children in some way direct the course of the childrens’ lives?

Many people say that curses have to do with the Old Testament only and do not apply to New Testament believers in our age of Grace. Unfortunately, this is not true, but through Jesus Christ, we can break these curses. The Old Testament Jew had to endure the wrath of the curse until God’s justice was satisfied, but because of God’s Grace towards us in Jesus Christ, the curses can be broken in Jesus’ Name.

Gal 3:13

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Just as salvation did not come unto us until we applied the following scriptures:
Rom 10:9

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Acts 16:31

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Neither do curses break until we apply the scriptures that break them. After praying and asking God in Jesus Christ’s Name what curses have been placed upon us because of the sins of our fathers or curses placed upon us or our family line by others, we then apply Galatians 3:13 to the specific curse, and pray a prayer similar to this:

“In the name of Jesus Christ, I break any and all curses placed against me by witchcraft and command the curses and spirits from them to return to the senders (Psalm 109).

In the name of Jesus Christ, I now renounce, break and loose myself from all demonic subjection; from any ungodly soul ties to mother, father, grandparents, or any other person, living or dead ,who have ever dominated or controlled me, in any way which is contrary to the will of God and the Word of God.

I thank you Lord for setting me free. I also repent and ask You to forgive me, if I have ever dominated or controlled some other person in the wrong way.

In accordance with Leviticus 26, I do now confess the sins of my ancestors: Idolatry, witchcraft, occultism, lust, adultery, divorce, perversion, rebellion, stubbornness, and wicked heart of unbelief. I claim forgiveness because of the provisions in 1 John 1:9, break the curses and lift the curses, whoredoms and iniquities from me and my descendants. I command all spirits associated with these to leave me and my family and go wherever Jesus wants to send them.”

(Prayers taken from “Principles of Deliverance & Mass Deliverance, Booklet 27,” Pastor Win Worley, 1983, pp. 18,20)
