Assembly of God Pastor Encounters Demons

I have been a member of Hegewisch Baptist Church several years. Recently a work assignment took me out of state where I met a young man who had been an Assembly of God pastor for about four years.  I began to share about Hegewisch and the ministry to believers.  When I mentioned that spirits had been cast out of me, he looked at me rather oddly and was somewhat less than enthusiastic.  Evidently the Holy Spirit touched him however and he began to share some problem areas in his own life.  His other friends with us seemed rather startled to hear their pastor revealing these marital problems and other inner conflicts.

In a matter of moments, it was apparent that he was having some difficulties.  Looking at me he said, “Brother, I don’t know what is happening or what is coming over me but right now I don’t like you.”  He seemed puzzled by his own attitude.  I explained that demon spirits within him were reacting to the presence of a deliverance worker and bouncing their own uneasiness and dislike into his mind.  I told him that he need not be ashamed of this thing going on in his mind, nor did he have to accept and submit to this kind of harassment.  I offered to meet with him and some men of his congregation to share and pray for relief from this oppression.  He listened without comment.  After the Sunday evening service, the pastor remarked that at times it seemed as if he was wearing red sunglasses.  This caused everything to take on a red hue.  This had been very disturbing to him and although he sought the Lord about it, still recurred persistently.  Glancing at me skeptically he remarked that he had a lot of trouble with this whole question of deliverance.  Finally he said, “Well, go ahead and pray for me anyway.”

When I called for a spirit of Red, it reared up, roared fiercely at me and threatened to kill me.  The demon informed me, “My name is Blood, Blood,Blood!”  Although the ladies of the church began to huddle against the back wall, two men of the church joined me enthusiastically.  They became so excited they were shouting loudly at the demons.  Although I admired their zeal, the noise was totally unnecessary and a hindrance.

Quietly I suggested that they lower their voices since the volume of the voice has no effect on the demons.  The power comes through believers who move in the name and authority of Jesus.  Although he had never read a book or witnessed deliverance before, the pastor thrashed about, coughed, threw up, etc., and did all the things demons usually do when they manifest and come out.

It was enjoyable I had forgotten that I was not at Hegewisch until I glanced around.  When I saw all those shocked and frightened people I realized that I was probably the only one present who understood what was happening.  Quickly I bound the demons and told them that we could pray more the next night.  The pastor gave me an peculiar look and we all went home.

When I next attended their services they seemed a bit nervous and uneasy that I was there.  The pastor approached me and informed me that there would be no more of “that thing” which happened Sunday night.  Testily he said that whatever I had done to him had messed him up.  “I never had a day like I had Monday–had to take the day off, go to the doctor and get some tranquilizers.  I was a wreck!  My wife was upset; my congregation is upset; the guy who was standing next to you called that night and reported he was having all kinds of terrible problems too.  He wanted you to come pray for him but I told him to stay away from you.”

As I left the service later the pastor asked if I could get him a copy of Pigs in the Parlor to read.  I dropped it by his house later with a note since he was not at home.  A short time later the preacher came to my room and wanted to talk.  He said, “You know, I told you how messed up I was on Monday.  It was terrible.  I don’t understand what happened but it was pretty bad and was bothering me.  A lot of things were upsetting me and I was having real trouble.”

He had returned to his home state over the weekend and looked up an older and very mature Assembly of God preacher he knew there.  He explained his difficulties and particularly what had happened when I came to his church.  When the older pastor was asked his opinion, he answered, “You are loaded with demons and you need help.  That fellow just got them stirred to the top.  I don’t know whether anything came out or not, but they at least surfaced, whereas before they were hidden.  You didn’t know about them but now you had better deal with them.”

Here then was a young man of God, bewildered and cautious because he had been taught that Christians could never have demons.  His dilemma and vacillation was obvious as he shared his feelings with another man, “I am an Assembly of God pastor and I believe God has called me to this ministry.  My church is a part of the denomination but how can I continue in this if I am to accept what I believe I am seeing and experiencing?”

His friend suggested that we contact the superintendent of the Assemblies of God in that area for his views.  After listening to the story he remarked, “Pastor, the only Assembly of God churches on our records which are prospering and really doing the work of the Lord are those casting demons out of Christians.  The rest are faltering or remaining static.  There’s no doubt about it, those that are going and growing are the ones casting out demons.  Yes, Christians can have demons and yes, it sounds as if you are having that kind of trouble yourself.”

For the next three hours we engaged the enemy, as the preacher lay writhing on the floor.  Hordes of spirits poured out of him.  Days later he approached me to apologize and say that he had thought I was of the devil but now thanked God for my ministry.  He assured me I was always welcome at his church and said, “The strangest and most unusual things have been happening.  Everywhere I turn something is coming at me about deliverance or demons.  I walked home, opened my mailbox and there was a paper I had never previously received.  It was advertising a deliverance camp meeting with Win Worley as speaker and his books and tapes on deliverance were featured.”

God has many potential instruments in the fundamental churches today to do deliverance.  However they must be willing to accept the truth about spiritual warfare and become God’s battle axe (Jeremiah 51:20).
